The Mondauk Mile

For years, community runners speculated on the true distance of the track at Mondauk Park in Dresher.  Rumor had it that someone had measured it and it was less than a mile!  Regulars at the track found themselves struggling to run the same pace in local races.
Finally, someone in the running club measured the track, and lo and behold -- it was found to be only .93 miles!  More precisely, the first quarter was 1245 feet, the first half 2470 feet (.46 miles), the three-quarter marker was actually 3690 feet, and the total track was only 4890 feet.  (That was the inside circumference; the outside was closer to 5000 feet.)

Recent alterations to the track by Upper Dublin Township now make the track a full and complete mile.  In addition, bringing the track "in" will reduce the backup into the Dillon Road parking entrance (e.g., on soccer and baseball days).

Time will tell whether the longer track will produce faster runners or more complaints.  In the meantime, local residents can more confidently say how many miles they treked, and know that they were "real" miles.  The Ambler Area Running Club thanks Upper Dublin Township for its improvements to the Mondauk Park track.

(November 10, 2002)  Quarter-mile marker posts are now up at the correct positions of the track.
